The understanding, skills and knowledge acquired through reading and comprehension are tools that are invaluable to empower individuals and generations to come to break out of poverty and enjoy better quality of life.  

It is indeed essential to acknowledge the lasting and substantial effects that low literacy levels have on individuals and communities. Low literacy is certainly an enormous challenge that affects multiple aspects of lives, from mental well-being to educational attainment and future opportunities. There are many ways to tackle this problem and it is important to recognize the value of strong literacy standards for individuals and for society as a whole.
